The Secret's Out - Lykke Books - Opening May 2024!

Updated: Feb 7

In 2022 Brie Taralson founded Lykke Communities. This non-profit was born out of a desire to make a lasting impact on the communities served, in how people connect to one another. From that grew another passion project; with creation of a community hub concept in downtown New Ulm, MN anchored by her bookstore, Lykke Books, and focused on creating a third place – a space outside home, work or school where community is formed – where people of all ages gather to break bread, share ideas, and build relationships. Fast forward two years and this dream is coming to life.

Opening this spring, the space will function as an art and business incubator, filling gaps in the community that are currently unaddressed – in retail offerings, healthy grab-and-go food options powered by Gutes Essen Deli & Catering and Crush 80/20, as well as a maker space for art creation. In partnership with our sister 501(c)3 non-profit organization, it will also offer youth programming and spaces for movement-based activities, education, and other events. Lykke Books is a general interest bookstore specializing in Minnesota authors as well as gift items and other products made in New Ulm. The store plans to carry a full spectrum of adult and children’s books as well as sheet music and instrument supplies.

“We are currently conducting focus groups, and a youth survey to learn more about the programs that our community youth would like to have offered out of our space.” said founder Taralson. “We look forward to offering the community a “hub” for activity, connection and resources for healthy living in New Ulm, for all ages.”, she continued. “Lykke (“LOO-kah”) is the Danish word for happiness, (good) luck, fortune, blessing. We wanted to bring this concept to fruition to serve the area with our mission.” she finished.

Lykke Books is currently offering top titles at their pop-up stores, housed at Sweet Haven Tonics, downtown New Ulm. The bookstore also offers direct-to-your-door titles through their website www.lykkebooks.com. Taralson explains, “We wanted to offer a way to shop locally, but still enjoy the convenience and selection of titles that we have not selected for our pop-up store.” With the addition of their new brick-and-mortar space at 203 N Minnesota Street, slated to be completed mid - May 2024, the concept will come full circle to serve New Ulm, and neighboring communities.

You can find out more about the progress of this new, downtown business, and also ways to support their growth at their website www.lykkebooks.com, or by attending a pop-up-shop at one of the next event dates, also found on the website.
